It was nice to get to meet with you at lunch today and catch up on a few things.
It certainly was a nice surprise to see the resurrected WITCH this morning. It was amazing to see what a good simulation you have set up. Even things I had forgotten looked quite familiar. Now we should all recite the powers of two in unison.
Do you remember how to set the PDP switch register to allow a priviledged login from other than the console? I guess maybe you never had to bother with that :-)

Even though we never had to bother with that, I am familiar with the process. There was a filter in the LOGIN program that checked the switch settings on the front of the PDP-11. If the keyboard number was not zero and the switches were not set properly, the program would print the "INVALID ENTRY - PLEASE TRY AGAIN" message and ask for the PPN again.
Since we can't physically put our fingers on the switches at this time, we could login as (1,1) and poke the correct switch values into the address that is retrieved from PEEK(32767%+32633%).
Do I win some kind of prize for this? |
