LET'S TRAVEL BACK IN TIME...

The year is 1977 and the place is a small room on the first floor of Milliken Science Hall at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. If you're lucky, you're sitting in front of one of the two VT50 DecScopes. If you're not so lucky, you're hunched over an LA36 DecWriter loaded with used greenbar paper. If you're really unlucky, you're out in the hallway on the old ASR-33 teletype.

Your fingers perch over the keyboard and you type HELLO followed by your PPN. You log into the system. You have just eaten supper and you will be here for many hours. Hopefully not too many "outsiders" will drop in while you work your magic. You can feel the adrenaline start to flow. Your heart races. The green vinyl seat starts to feel warm beneath you.

Yes, you're on the Wofford WITCH, your favorite place to be.

THIS SITE IS A TRIBUTE TO THE EARLY DAYS OF COMPUTING AT
WOFFORD COLLEGE, DR. DAN W. OLDS, AND THE WOFFORD WITCH,
A DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION PDP-11/40 MINICOMPUTER
RUNNING THE RSTS/E TIMESHARING OPERATING SYSTEM.

This site is brought to you by several Wofford alumni from the late 1970s and early 1980s who went on to have successful careers in the Information Technology field. We owe much of where we are today to Dr. Olds and the Wofford Witch.

The WITCH has been brought back to life for you by Kevin, the original wizard.
